On Sunday 12 July 2015, many Peninsula Golf Club members plus visitors were able to enjoy a rare opportunity to take a conducted tour of the new golf course being developed on the Wainui site. The majority came away ecstatic.

This memorable 'walk-about' was greatly enhanced by a very informative commentary delivered by Stuart Reese (Peninsula's club professional)

The long overdue promise of a new top class golf course and facilities is getting excitingly closer to becoming reality.

It seems we may have unintentionally offended some Peninsula Golf Club members in good standing by posting their images on YouTube.

The PGC Board has instructed the General Manager, Terry Yacyshen, to write to us to address the immediate concern.

“Please remove the associated YouTube posts for both events”

Hence the previous links to these forbidden & censored YouTube videos are not currently available.

In response to the above letter we wrote in reply….

March 18, 2016

To the Chairman and Board members
Board of Management
Peninsula Golf Club Inc

Further to your letter dated February 19, 2016

Having on two occasions discussed with the PGC General Manager, Terry Yacyshen,  the ongoing concerns of the Peninsula Golf Club’s Board with regard to privacy issues about these two videos we had posted to YouTube

  • 1.     Farewell to Stuart and Charlotte Reese from Peninsula Golf Club
  • 2.     PGC WAINUI Update 23.01.2016

be advised that the links to these two videos have now been removed from http://peninsula-golf-club-wainui.blogspot.co.nz/p/phoptos-and-videos.html

It was never our intention to offend anyone in anyway and we unreservedly apologise for any problems these videos may have caused.

We are somewhat disappointed that our verbal offer to pixilate out the faces of those who complained in order to assure their privacy appears to have been flatly rejected by the Board.

The legal opinion we received was that pixilation of faces to provide anonymity is now an acceptable standard practice for broadcast television video and does meet YouTube video privacy requirements.

The function that was held to farewell and thank Stuart and Charlotte Reese for their 16 years of invaluable service was a most significant event in the ongoing history of the Peninsula Golf Club Inc and we believe that the vast majority of the club members who were unable to attend would want to have enduring access to Stuart Reese’s parting comments.

Having sought further legal advice it appears we have at least some options

1.   We can transcribe Stuarts spoken comments from the video into a written format (as it seems was done from our video of Matthew Laird’s PGC WAINUI Update 23.01.2016) then copy and post this to our website.
2.   We can also extract an audio copy of Stuarts parting comments and post it to our website in an audio MP3 format.
3.   Or we can post both to http://peninsula-golf-club-wainui.blogspot.co.nz/

By acquiescing to the demands of what appears to be a very few disgruntled members, is the Peninsula Golf Club now at risk of being denied the limited and often one off opportunities to acquire enviable historic video records as we changeover to our all new golfing facilities at Wainui after 60 years at Red Beach?

We look forward to your response.
Sincerely

Len Mills

Why are we still waiting for a response?

Meanwhile the function to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Peninsula Golf Club at Red Beach was held at the clubrooms on Sunday 17 April 2016

The unexpected aggravation that resulted as consequence of the 'YouTube' video of the Stuart Reese farewell event indicated an unprecedented requirement to seek permission from the PGC Board to video all future milestone functions.

Accordingly we emailed PGC Management with this request....

·         Please add XXXXXXXX to your list of those hoping to attend the PGC 60th Anniversary mix and mingle on the afternoon of Sunday 17th April from 1:00pm.

·         Would you also confirm with the Peninsula Board of Management that there will not be any privacy issues, and that we will be able to video this historic occasion to ensure members can have an important record of this major event which will become a significant part of the ongoing history of the Peninsula Golf Club?

Here is the reply we received....

Hi Mr. Mills,

On behalf of the Board I’ve been requested to send this note to confirm consent for you to record the Anniversary event with the caveat that the attached Media Policy is strictly adhered.

If you have any questions as to its interpretation don’t hesitate to contact me via phone or email.

I will be in attendance at the event and let me know if I can help in any way.

Thx,

Terry

Terry Yacyshen

General Manager

Human Resources Policy and Procedures Manual

Section: Board
Subject: Media Recording
No: 747
Effective Date: April 12, 2016
Approved By: PGC Board

Policy
This policy is in regards to the recording of “media”. The term media evolves rapidly over time but in this case is defined as any method of recording a likeness that can be stored for later use. At the time of writing this policy, it refers to photographs, videos, and/or audio recordings in any format including cell phones during events sanctioned or hosted by the Peninsula Golf Club and/or Wainui. Conceivably, it could apply to artworks or unforeseen future media as well.

The Peninsula Golf Club recognizes that individuals (PGC members, guests, or the public) attending events hosted at the club often want to record media for various reasons. Individuals are able to take photographs and videos for personal use. However, members, guests, or the public may not want to be included in such recordings and the personal privacy of all in attendance must be respected for the good of the club.

Under no circumstances will the recording of information be posted on public mediums of any kind.

Any and all recordings that are sanctioned by the Board and are intended to be shared with the Members of the Peninsula Golf Club and/or Wainui are to be provided to management for editing and posting to the official website in the “Members Only” area.

These recordings will be viewed initially by the Board with the specific desire to ensure all Member privacy interests are protected and that any and all postings are in keeping with the good name and branding of the club and its intellectual properties.

Should recordings of any kind be posted without the express consent of the Board the posting individual will be subject to scrutiny under the “Conduct Unbecoming a Member” policy as posted in the “Board Policy Manual”.

1.  Consent

1.1. For uses related to use by PGC, documented express consent must be given, outlining the specific reason(s) for collection, use and disclosure of the materials.

1.2. Prior to the event taking place a request must be lodged with the Board to allow the recording of media in any form.

1.3. Consent may be given orally or in writing by the Board, including electronically, with name and date of agreement where individuals are identifiable in recordings.

2. Audio Recordings

2.1. No audio recordings can be made, for personal use or otherwise.

3. Courtesy
It is recommended that individuals attending PGC events wanting to record media obtain permission from persons to be included in any recording, even if the recording is intended for personal use. Verbal permission from involved individuals is considered sufficient for personal recordings.

****************************************

Is this an example of a heavy handed, politically correct ‘Media Policy’ that you would expect from what was once an all inclusive family friendly golfing club?

Surely this would be more applicable hard nosed policy for outfits such as the GCSB, MI5 or the CIA?

The ‘GOOD NEWS’

Fortunately we were able to capture for posterity a historic video record of the Peninsula Golf Club’s 60th Anniversary mix and mingle held on the afternoon of Sunday 17th April 2016.

The ‘BAD NEWS’
As a result of the PGC Board’s new Media Policy we are unable to share this video with PGC members who may be interested in viewing it.

But ‘WAIT THERE IS MORE’
In accordance with PGC Board’s new Media Policy we emailed PGC Management the following request

Please add Len & Val Mills to your list of those wishing to take part in the PGC WAINUI WALKABOUT – Sunday 1st May 2016. We would like to do the 4km tour taking in holes 3, 4, 5, 15, 14, 13, 12, 17, 8.

Would you also confirm with the Peninsula Board of Management that there will not be any privacy issues, and that we will be able to video this occasion to ensure members can have an enduring record of this experience?

As we discovered when collecting material for the 60th Anniversary of the Peninsula Golf Club, videos and photos of these events will become a significant part of the ongoing history of the Peninsula Golf Club.

With hindsight, we probably should not have been too surprised when we received a phone call from the PGC General Manager Terry Yacyshen advising us that the PGC Board had unilaterally decided to not grant permission for us to video this rare opportunity to view the new golf course located at Wainui from inside the confines of the course perimeter boundary fence.

Our verbal request to the PGC General Manager, Terry Yacyshen, for a written explanation of the PGC Board’s decision to deny us this one off opportunity to video record this important historic event is also still awaiting a reply.
