THE ABSURDITY OF THE PENINSULA GOLF CLUB NAME CHANGE:

When Peninsula Golf Club members initially voted on 23rd June 2009 for a move from Red Beach to a promised all new 'walk off - walk on' golfing facility at Wainui, most long standing members assumed that their Golf Club's name would remain as 'Peninsula Golf Club' hence continuing and remaining unchanged since 1956

What the majority of Peninsula Golf Club members were naively unaware of was that deceitful moves would be contrived to eliminate 'Peninsula Golf Club' as the club's name and to foist an unnecessary new name on the unsuspecting membership

Peninsula Golf Club Board and Management were very much aware that the bulk of their long standing members were not happy with this proposal.

Unfortunately the Board and Management went ahead and unilaterally determined that all Peninsula Golf Club members would be denied their democratic voting right on the proposed new name.

By cunningly avoiding having to change the the name of the
'Peninsula Golf Club Constitution'

[A move which would have legally required a vote
with a minimum 66% of eligible members to be in favour of changing the name to Wainui at a Special General Meeting]

this skulduggery has resulted in the Peninsula Golf Club's new golf course now trading as WAINUI.

What follows on this page is a brief summary of events leading up to the eventual move and the undemocratic change of name to WAINUI

WHY BOTHER TO CHANGE ?

Do we really need a new identity when the Peninsula Golf Club already has a brand?

Why do we need to pay outsiders to come up with a new name for the club?

Are you still intending to seek members input into the naming of the club at Wainui?

The move to Wainui is a unique opportunity that we have been given to change our image to be more open and inviting to the public.
The name Peninsula Golf Club has served us well for nearly 60 years but it might not be the best name to realise the potential at Wainui.
But be assured we are keen not to lose the Peninsula legacy and it will be preserved at Wainui.
The design company Milk has been engaged to work with us but they are doing much more than coming up with a name.
Our brand is about the look and feel the club wants to project and how that can help make the business of the club work successfully. You can check out what they do here http://milk.co.nz/
Some members have already been involved in helping the team from Milk get to know our club and our needs and they are now in the early stages of researching and developing three creative options.
The Board got a first look at these this week and we have asked for some visuals to go up in the clubhouse sometime over the next week.
We invite you to think about how these concepts make you feel and also what you think would appeal to your friends and family and make them want to come along to join you at the club.
We need our new club to be a more sociable place for a wider range of people and not just golfers

Does it appear as if a consultant or marketing organisation  may have persuaded the Peninsula Golf Club’s Board of Management that the golf club’s historic name (which has been in place since 1956) should now be made redundant and replaced by one of these three questionable options…..

How many of those Peninsula Golf Club members who voted for the move to a new golf facility located at Wainui have also assumed that their "Peninsula Golf Club" name would remain unchanged as since 1956?

This raises a vital question…..

What authority or mandate does the Board of Management have to embark on a costly exercise to promote another name for your club?

To change the club name PENINSULA GOLF CLUB.....

Will a vote by members be required....

As the club name PENINSULA GOLF CLUB is imbedded in their CONSTITUTION.

The RULES OF THE PENINSULA GOLF CLUB state in Clause 11

11.00. ALTERATION OF THESE RULES:

11.01 Subject to the provisions of the Incorporated Societies Act 1908, these Rules may be amended, rescinded or added to from time to time by special resolution carried by two thirds majority (66%) at a General  Meeting.

11.02 Notice of such resolution shall be circulated to members not less than fourteen days prior to the meeting at which the resolution will be considered.

The first obvious indication of any rebranding proposal came in this Email to members dated 18 June 2015….

Re-branding information – there are four boards in the club lounge with ideas around the branding of the Wainui Golf Club and Facility. These show some interesting words, pictures and concepts. We would appreciate people’s feedback on these concepts. There are feedback forms, and a box for when you have completed the form, in the lounge. Please read the form carefully as it does tell you the ideas behind each concept. We are looking for you to give us your comments on what features you like best and what makes you feel good about what part of each concept.

However, if you do refer back to the PGC - 6 March 2015 FAQ document, it does hint of an intent by the Board to spend club funds to complete the rebranding and marketing....

Q The $500,000 to be paid by PLDL will be used for what?

A. To cover the anticipated deficit for this year and to ensure we do not have to use the $1ml deposit to fund it.
It also allows PGC to pay for advice and consultants to help manage the project and to complete the rebranding and marketing, all of which are essential to keep the cost of membership under control.

WHY DOES IT SEEM AS IF THESE ‘MOOD BOARDS’ FOCUS MORE ON FOOD, WINE AND DINING, THAN GOLF?

UNSURPRISING, BUT IS THIS YET ANOTHER CLEVER ILLUSORY MARKETING PLOY OF APPEALING TO THE WARM FUZZY EMOTIONS OF PENINSULA GOLF CLUB MEMBERS RATHER THAN DEALING WITH COLD LOGIC AND FISCAL REALITY?

WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THIS WORDING IN THE PICTURE AT BOTTOM RIGHT OF THE ‘WAINUI’ MOOD BOARD?

Feedback forms were provided to seek the members opinions…..

When these ‘re-brand’ alternatives were first suggested, most long standing members understandably assumed, whichever one of these three choices was singled out to be the most tolerable would then be put to a vote for or against the other important option of retaining the original name 'Peninsula Golf Club'

This would need to be resolved at a meeting, as is required within the rules of the Peninsula Golf Club’s Constitution, where the resolution to change the name would be considered.

Board Update - November 2015

Branding

On September 8th we invited you all along to at Orewa College to hear directly from the branding experts who have been advising the Board about what we need to do to achieve the vision for Wainui.

In the newsletter that followed we made available the branding presentation from the evening, explained the consultation processes we went through to get member input, and informed you of the Board’s recommendation to call the new facility Wainui.

Your feedback has generally been positive with most people understanding the need for a change and keen to move forward.

After all this consultation it has been decided that PGC incorporated will be known as WAINUI when we move.

We are currently working on developing a new WAINUI website and planning signage for the entrance and around the building based on WAINUI.

The new name 'Wainui' has now being presented to the Peninsula Golf Club members as a 'fait accompli' !

fait accompli

ˌfeɪt əˈkɒmpli, noun

1     A thing that has already been decided before those affected could get an opportunity to vote on it.
A strategy designed to leave those with opposing views few options.

Did the democratically elected Board of Management of the Peninsula Golf Club have any legal mandate to inflict their new name for Peninsula Golf Club on members as a 'fait accompli'  ?

THE OTHER STILL UNANSWERED QUESTION IS:

WHY DID THEY BOTHER TO CHANGE THE NAME?

Maybe the motivation to change the name  was driven by the urgent need to
market this dodgy housing scheme?

For more info go to >>>  THE QUESTIONABLE MARKETING OF REAL ESTATE AT WAINUI GOLF COURSE

Was this an essential driver for the devious ploys that were used to impose the name change  from Peninsula to WAINUI?
